Lord Robert Fellowes, who passed away at the age of 82, was a cherished member of the British Royal Family.
As the husband of Lady Jane Spencer, Princess Diana’s sister, he was not only an uncle to
Prince William and Prince Harry but also a steadfast supporter and confidant within the royal circle.
Together with Lady Jane, Lord Fellowes raised three children: Alexander, Eleanor, and Laura.
A Pillar of Support During Royal Challenges
During the tumultuous 1990s, Lord Fellowes served as the private secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II,
offering unwavering support during a period marked by significant royal trials.
This era included the high-profile divorces of Princess Diana from Prince Charles, Sarah Ferguson from Prince Andrew,
and Princess Anne from Mark Phillips.
Lord Fellowes’ role was crucial in managing these personal and public crises.
One of his notable contributions came in 1992, when he played a key role in addressing the Windsor Castle fire, which devastated 115 rooms. His leadership and dedication during this crisis were invaluable.
Controversies and Allegations
Lord Fellowes faced controversy following the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997.
The accident in Paris, which also claimed the lives of Diana’s partner Dodi Fayed, driver Henri Paul, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, led to allegations by Mohamed Al Fayed,
Dodi’s father, who claimed that Lord Fellowes was involved in a conspiracy to murder the couple.
Lord Fellowes, however, firmly denied these allegations.
On July 29, Lord Fellowes passed away due to undisclosed causes, as reported in his obituary in The Times. Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, honored Lord Fellowes on social media, praising him as an exceptional individual known for his humor, wisdom, and integrity. He expressed profound pride in having been Lord Fellowes’ brother-in-law.
Lord Fellowes’ connection to the Royal Family extended beyond his professional role. His father, Sir William “Billy” Fellowes, was the land agent at Sandringham Estate for 30 years. Sandringham was also the birthplace of Lord Fellowes, underscoring its significance to the family.
Queen Elizabeth once noted, “Robert is the only one of my private secretaries I have held in my arms,” reflecting the close bond they shared. In recognition of his service, Lord Fellowes was honored with the title of Baron Fellowes of Shotesham in Norfolk.
A Lasting Impact
Lord Robert Fellowes leaves behind a lasting legacy through his dedicated service to the Crown and his support for his loved ones. His life and contributions will be remembered and celebrated as a testament to his enduring commitment to the British Royal Family. May he rest in peace.
